Student Bar Association Nominations Open!

Nominations for the 2020-2021 SBA Board are open. As a student at Akron Law, you are automatically a member of SBA. As such, you can nominate individuals to the executive board and for class representatives. The executive board is composed of the president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary. To be eligible to run for an executive board position you MUST have completed two full semesters of law school prior to the time you will take office (not including the summer semester). Further, each student can nominate up to 4 class representatives (2L, 3L, part-time).

Any individual who would like to be nominated for an executive board or class representative position on SBA must get at least two nominations (you are able to nominate yourself). Nominations will open on Monday, April 13 and will close on Thursday, April 16 at 6 p.m. You may only nominate representatives from your representative class, but all classes are able to nominate qualified individuals for the executive board positions. Spring Start Students: you are not able to nominate class representatives at this time, as your class election will be next spring, but you are able to nominate and vote for executive positions.

The Role of Intellectual Property in Life Sciences Innovation and a Global Health Crisis
Jon P. Santamauro, Senior Director for International Government Affairs at AbbVie

In recent days, there have been calls in many countries, including the U.S., to disregard patents on treatments, vaccines, and medical devices needed to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. Jon Santamauro, a Senior Director for International Government Affairs at AbbVie, a leading innovative pharmaceutical company, will discuss the role of IP inpharmaceutical innovation to develop treatments that give us a fighting chance to beat this pandemic and the next. He will also talk about efforts to make treatments widely available during the current crisis. Mr. Santamauro is kind enough to be appearing and speaking on his own behalf to enrich our students’ learning experience, and any views he expresses will be his own and do not represent the views of AbbVie. His schedule is subject to change due to the fast-moving nature of events.

Prior to joining AbbVie, Mr. Santamauro had a long career at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including service as the Intellectual Property Attaché in the U.S. Mission to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland. During this time, he represented the United States at the WTO, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and other UN organizations in matters relating to intellectual property.
