Public Interest Auction & Trivia Night: March 24

SBA is hosting its annual public interest auction- this year featuring a TRIVIA NIGHT!  The event will be held on Friday, March 24, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Portage Country Club, located at 240 North Portage Path, Akron, OH 44303.

Purchase your tickets and/or register a trivia team at: https://commerce.cashnet.com/LAWORG

This event raises funds for Akron Law’s public interest fellowship, which provides stipends to students working in public interest jobs that would not otherwise be paid.  If you wish to receive a stipend from the Public Interest fund, you must attend the auction or otherwise contribute to the event.

Show off your trivia knowledge with teams of up to six people, and engage in some friendly competition with your classmates, professors, and the Akron legal community! Questions will cover a large range of categories including entertainment, geography, sports, and even local trivia!

Between rounds of trivia, we will have several items up for live auction, and a silent auction will be accessible throughout the evening.  Items up for auction this year include a J.R. Smith autographed jersey and shirt, Lake Erie Monsters tickets, a round of golf for four at Shaker Heights Country Club, dinners with your favorite professors, and much more!

Tickets for the evening are $10 for students/guests of students and $20 for anyone else.  All are welcome to attend.  Registration for a trivia team of 6 people is an additional $20.  All proceeds from this event will go to the Akron Law Public Interest Fellowship Fund. Please direct any questions to Haley Martinelli at hkm8@zips.uakron.edu or ask your SBA Class Representatives.

Fire Alarm Testing in Law Building on Wednesday

We received a call from Capital Planning notifying us that they will be testing the fire alarms in the law building tomorrow morning beginning around 9:30 to 10:00 a.m.  Please anticipate sporadic testing of the fire alarm preceded by an announcement. There will be between 3 and 6 events over a 3 hour period, each lasting 4 to 5 minutes of disruption. This is required in order to get occupancy for the next phase of the project and move in over spring break.

Applications Are Now Being Accepted for the Con Law Student Fellowships

Fellows work with the director of the Center for Constitutional Law at Akron, Prof. Tracy Thomas, on research, programming, and public education.  Projects include, but are not limited to, research for scholarly books and articles (both legal and historical archival work), leadership of student discussion forums, developing content for social media, and working with community partners. More information about the work of the Center generally is available on the website at https://www.uakron.edu/law/ccl/

Fellows are expected to devote five hours per week to the work of the Con Law Center for the entirety of the school year. Research work for the Center will be compensated, while the other work for the Center of public education and programming is volunteered as part of the fellowship experience. The Con Law Center will select three students to serve as fellows in the next academic year.  Interested students should send a current resume and letter with an explanation of interest in the con law fellowship to Professor Tracy Thomas at thomast@uakron.edu by March 31, 2017.

Of related interest in the future, Professor Brant Lee will also be selecting Social Justice fellows to work with him under the umbrella of the Social Justice Project. This is a separate program and a separate application process from the con law fellowships, and interested applicants should contact Prof. Lee directly at btlee@uakron.edu.  Students would not be able to do both the con law and the social justice fellowships due to the demands of each position
