Reminder: Graduation Applications for May 2017 graduates are due on October 1. Don’t wait, apply today!

The 2017 Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association (CMBA) Ethics & Professionalism Essay Competition is underway. The competition is open to all full- and part-time students enrolled in a J.D. or LL.M. program at an ABA-accredited law school.

The first-place winner will receive $1,500 (and potential publication in the CMBA Bar Journal); the second-place winner will receive $1,000.

This year’s topic is:

What are the ethical considerations for law firms publishing law-related material on their websites and in their social media (e.g., blogs) written by attorneys who are not members of the firm (i.e., “ghost writing”)? You may presume that the firm has the author’s permission to publish the material.

Essays should be no more than 1600 words and will be submitted electronically in Microsoft Word. The deadline for submissions is February 9, 2017. For more information, please visit CleMetroBar.org or call competition director Tom Horwitz at 440-892-3331.

The Deadline for the Supreme Court of Ohio Office of Admissions to receive your Application to Take the Bar Examination is November 1, 2016.

 

A form required as part of the application packet is the Character Certificate, which must be processed by Law Student Services and signed by Assistant Dean Brian Fuller.

The Presidential Election, the Supreme Court, and the Constitution will be the topic of the next Constitutional Law Forum on Tuesday, September 27th at 12:15 – 1:15 p.m. in room 140 at the McDowell Law Center. Please join us to express your opinions, listen to your colleagues, and debate the critically important constitutional issues that have arisen in this election. Moderated by Professor Emeritus Wilson Huhn and the Con Law Student Fellows. Pizza and soda will be provided.

Exciting opportunity for 1L or 2L student with a science, business, or engineering background who may be interested in participating in an NSF entrepreneurial project with the School of Biomedical Engineering to design of a multi-function, noninvasive Gerontechnology kiosk that enables older adults (age 60+) to monitor and diagnose an array of physical ailments inside of a single structure, such as diabetes, cholesterol, hypertension, fragility fractures (hip, wrist and spine fractures), using heart monitor, respirator, ultra sound imaging, blood pressure gauge, and nanotechnology. You will be working with an engineering student first to conduct market research to determine the viability of the proposal and potential customers, such as NASA, biomedical equipment manufacturers, nursing homes etc. Your role will be to meet with potential equipment manufacturers to determine the legal and IP issues related to product integration, licensing and risk assessment.

Your time commitment under the I-Corp program would require you be present at interactive meetings to present findings Fridays from noon -2:00 for 7 weeks on October 7, 21, Nov 4,11, and 18. If this project is selected for funding, the selected student will be eligible for the next phase which is product design and implementation and could result in a patented product for commercialization.
