It’s that time of year again, and we are excited to announce the 18th Annual Law Student Closing Argument Competition. Attached please find a flier we would like you to immediately distribute to your 2nd and 3rd year law students who are interested in competing in a competition scheduled to take place Thursday, October 13, 2016, at the Cuyahoga County Courthouse. The event is sponsored by the Landskroner Foundation for Children, a child advocacy organization, which attempts to advance and protect the rights of children, further children’s issues and promote the good and well fare of children in need or at risk. We are offering law students from your institution the opportunity to take part in our competition. There are monetary scholarships for the top three place finishers, $750, $500, and $200 respectively. We appreciate your cooperation in extending this invitation to your students and providing them with this flier and/or e-mail notice of our competition. Tuesday, September 20th, from 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM, members of the Akron Bar Association Liaison Committee will be in the new law building area outside the classrooms with membership information and treats! To celebrate Constitution Day, Akron Law’s Center for Constitutional Law will be live tweeting “The 27 Amendments of the Constitution” this Thursday all day.  Follow us on Twitter @conlawcenter.

The Center for Constitutional Law will host Professor Laurie Levenson  who will speak on Friday, September 16th in recognition of Constitution Day.  Professor Levenson is a nationally-regarded expert on criminal law and ethics, and a frequent TV commentator known for her work on the OJ Simpson trial. Please join us from 12:00 – 1:00 PM in Room 160 at the McDowell Law Building as Professor Levenson speaks on “Innocence and the Constitution: Why We Need to Do Better.” This event is free and open to the public.  Pizza will be provided. It’s time to register for the 18th Annual Law Student Closing Argument Competition, which will be on Thursday, October 13 at the Cuyahoga County Courthouse. This competition is open to any upper-division law student, who will give a 15-minute closing argument in a civil case for the plaintiff, a catastrophically injured child. The argument is on damages only.

The top three students will receive scholarship awards of $750 for first place, $500 for second place, and $200 for third place. Akron Law has traditionally performed well at this competition–we took home first and third place last year, and in 2013 we swept all three places!
