Career Planning Workshops – week of April 8, 2013

12:20 – 1:10 p.m. in Room 134 –  Careers in Court Administration: Elizabeth Stephenson, Esq., Court Administrator, Tuscarawas County Court of Common Pleas and Judith Dzigeil, Esq., Court Administrator, New Philadelphia Municipal Court, will be here to speak about their careers and offer advice to students interested in careers in the courts. Food will be served to those who attend.

3:30 – 4 p.m. – Student meet and greet with members of the Akron Law Alumni Association Board. In room 134. A casual opportunity for you to meet and network with area attorneys and ask any questions you might have. RSVP to Lia Evans at liaevans@uakron.edu.

Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at 12:20 and 5:15 p.m. in Room 152 – How to Succeed in your Summer Job. EVENT CANCELED The Career Planning staff and several upper class students will speak about their summer experiences and what it takes to make a good impression and get the most of your summer experiences. If you are working anywhere this summer, you won’t want to miss this presentation. We will also have valuable handouts for those who attend.

 

 

 

Protect Your Belongings

We would like to remind law students to never leave your valuables alone anywhere in the School of Law. Your textbooks, book bags, purses, laptops and other belongings can be easily taken in just “30 seconds.”

We welcome visitors to the School of Law and to the Law Library, both those associated with the University and those who are not. Having open doors, however, also means anyone can come into the building. It would be wise to always be careful and make it a habit to never leave your belongings unattended.

If you see suspicious behavior, please notify law school employees right away. You can call the University police yourself by dialing 330-972-2911 (if using a cell phone) or 911 if using a campus phone.

Reminder: Akron Law Alumni Association seeks Student Director – Applications due April 4th!

Message from Lia Evans, Director of Alumni and Annual Fund

The Akron Law Alumni Association (“LAA”) Board of Directors has a dedicated position on its Board for a student director.  This unique and valuable opportunity provides the student director a chance to become involved in alumni leadership and alumni activities with Akron Law.  The student director represents Akron Law students to the LAA Board and works with the Board to identify ways in which students and alumni may work and communicate together for the benefit of both groups. 

The student director serves in an ex-officio capacity and is expected to attend all Board meetings which are held at the School of Law on a bi-monthly basis throughout the academic year (i.e., August, October, December, February, and April).  The Board meetings begin at 4 p.m. and generally last for one and a half hours. 

Applications for the 2013-14 student director to the LAA Board of Directors will be accepted from 2013-14 upper division law students who are in good standing.  Applications should include: (1) a current resume of the student; (2) a brief statement as to why the student believes that he or she should be selected to serve on the LAA Board; and (3) a brief statement as to why he or she wants to serve on the LAA Board. 

The LAA Board’s executive committee will review the application materials and select a maximum of three students who will be invited to make a two-minute presentation to the Board at its April 9, 2013 meeting.  Students interested in being considered for this position should forward their application materials no later than Thursday, April 4 to Sue Staats in the Office of External Programs (either in hard copy form to Ms. Staats in the Office of External Programs which is located in the Dean’s Suite or electronic form to Ms. Staats at staats@uakron.edu).

Westlaw Password Summer Extension

Your Westlaw password may be used for academic purposes only. If you are not graduating this summer and are taking law classes or participating in a qualified program, you will have to extend your Westlaw password to keep it active.  If you do not qualify for an extension, you will still have 40 hours available on Westlaw and WestlawNext in the months of June and July. You may use these 40 hours to improve your research skills and complete online trainings.

Here are the programs that qualify extending your Westlaw password for the summer:

  • Summer law school classes
  • Law review work
  • Project for professor
  • Moot Court
  • Unpaid non-profit public interest internship/externship or pro bono work required for graduation.

Using your academic Westlaw password for commercial purposes is not permitted.  Commercial purposes is defined by Westlaw as “research conducted for a law firm, corporation or other entity (unrelated to law school) that is paying you to conduct said research or that is passing along the costs of said research to a third party.”
