2011 Class Gift

The University of Akron School of Law

 Why a Class Gift?

Every year, members of the graduating class contribute funds to begin their legacy as Akron Law alumni and to memorialize their class. The School of Law promotes class gifts to create a tradition of giving among students. Presentation of the class gift will be incorporated into your graduation ceremony.

What is the 2011 Class Gift?

The 2011 Class gift will be a framed color photograph of the current law school to be placed in the future new law school building. If additional funds are raised, other gift(s) will be considered. Dean Belsky has made the generous offer again this year to match each donation up to $150. Accordingly, by donating $25 you will have actually contributed $50! Furthermore, if you donate $25 now, and pledge to donate $50 in 2012 and $75 in 2013, Dean Belsky will presently match your pledged donation up to $150. This means that if you agree to pledge $150 over a three-year period you will see an immediate doubling of your donation in the amount of $300! Even if you cannot commit to a pledge or currently donate the full $25, please consider a contribution so that you can be part of this legacy.

Please find the 2011 Class Gift Infomation and Pledge Form here: http://www.uakron.edu/dotAsset/1906117.pdf

JOINT J.D./LL.M. IN IP LAW – Sessions Scheduled

LAW FACULTY APPROVES:

JOINT J.D./LL.M. IN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW

At its meeting earlier this month, the law faculty voted to create a joint J.D./LL.M. program in Intellectual Property Law, effective fall 2011.

INFORMATIONAL SESSIONS SCHEDULED:  Sessions will be held on Tuesday, March 29 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm in Room W-210 and 5:00 – 6:00 pm in Room L-151.

Under the program, a student would have to complete 100 credit hours of study, including 24 credit hours in intellectual property-related courses, earn an overall 3.0 GPA in IP courses, and satisfy all current requirements for the J.D. degree.   Included within the 24 credit hours would be a six-credit thesis, which would also satisfy the GWR requirement.  Up to 12 credits of IP-related course work at the J.D. level could be credited towards satisfaction of the LL.M. requirements. It is anticipated that a student could meet these requirements during three years of full-time study, plus summer study.  Students should apply for the program no later than the beginning of their second year of study.

At the same meeting, the faculty also approved changes to the current LL.M. requirements.  The number of required credits has been reduced from 30 to 24; all students would be required to enroll in Fundamentals of Intellectual Property (formerly Introduction to Intellectual Property); and all students would have to take a course in either patent, copyright or trademark law, as well as at least one international IP course.

SESSIONS SCHEDULED:  Sessions will be held on Tuesday, March 29 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm in Room W-210 and 5:00 – 6:00 pm in Room L-151.

Please contact either Professor Samuels at Samuels@uakron.edu or Assistant Dean Thorpe at LThorpe@uakron.edu if you have any questions.

SCANLON INN OF COURT ACCEPTING STUDENT APPLICATIONS FOR 2011-2012

The University of Akron School of Law in conjunction with the Akron Bar Association sponsors the Charles F. Scanlon Inn of Court. This is an extra-curricular activity for lawyers, judges, and law students. Students interested in participating in this unique experience may submit applications to Professor Carro by April 15, 2011. An application should include a cover letter reflecting, inter alia, that you have or have not previously applied, and a resume.

The Inn of Court, now in its third decade, is made up of attorneys with less than four years of experience, attorneys with four to fifteen years of experience, and senior attorneys and judges. We have Federal and State Court Judges as members, as well as renowned litigators. The Inn of Court meets each year from September through April (skipping December), once a month, to discuss ethics, public issues, and advocacy.

In addition to being a member of the Inn as a whole, each Inn member is also a participant in a pupilage group which might be likened to a subcommittee of the Inn. There are usually sixty to seventy people in the Inn as a whole and fifteen to eighteen people in each of four pupilage groups. The Inn as a whole meets in the evening once a month, on the THIRD WEDNESDAY of each month, except December. The pupilage group would also meet once a month for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or after work to discuss the matters presented in the general meeting.

At the monthly Inn of Court meetings we discuss diverse issues, including advocacy and ethics issues. This past term we discussed constitutional issues such as the genesis of the Ninth Amendment, Wikipedia, and the First Amendment.

We are fortunate to have eight positions allocated to the School of Law for interested and dedicated students to participate in the Inn for one year. If you are interested in participating and can attend the meetings outlined above, please submit a letter expressing your interest and a resume to Professor J. Dean Carro. Preference is given to students who have applied previously, and to graduating students who will not have the opportunity the following year to participate. The deadline for submitting your applications is April 15, 2011. Thank you for your attention.
