2011 Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair – October 21 & 22, 2011 – Washington Marriott Wardman Park; 2660 Woodley Road, NW; Washington, DC 20008.  The Equal Justice Works annual Conference and Career Fair is the largest public interest career fair in the country. It is the only event, solely dedicated to law students, where you’ll find more than 1000 public interest-minded students representing 200 law schools from across the country coming together to explore career options with leading nonprofit organizations and government agencies.  The Conference and Career Fair provides access to job opportunities for law students; connects employers with talented attorneys and law students; and offers a multitude of skill-building and career advising sessions with experts from around the country.

The Career Planning and Placement Office will pay the $25.00 registration fee for each registered student. Please e-mail Jeanne Kennedy in the CPPO (jeanne2@uakron.edu) by Thursday, September 15 at 12 noon if you plan to register.  2011 Conference and Career Fair student registration and interview application period has been extended to Monday, September 19 at 5 p.m. EDT

Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship for Law Students

Banner & Witcoff is proud to offer the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship for law students. This scholarship is part of Banner & Witcoff’s commitment to fostering the development of intellectual property lawyers from diverse backgrounds.

Eligibility

Law students who meet the selection criteria and have entered into a JD program at an ABA-accredited law school in the United States are eligible to apply for the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship. Applicants may not be a current or past employee of Banner & Witcoff, or directly related to a current employee of Banner & Witcoff.

Selection Criteria

  • Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship review board based on the following criteria:
  • Academic merit (undergraduate, graduate and law school)
  • Commitment to the pursuit of a career in IP law
  • Member of a historically under represented group in IP law (including race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability)
  • Written communication skills
  • Oral communication skills determined through an interview of the law student
  • Leadership qualities and community involvement

Financial Award

Recipients of the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship will receive $5,000 payable for the Fall semester oftheir second or third year of law school.

Application Process

Applications will be accepted September 5, 2011 through January 5, 2012. Awards will be announced in April 2012.

Applicants will submit the following documents for consideration:

  • Completed Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship application form
  • Resume
  • Academic transcripts (law school, undergraduate/graduate school)
  • Writing sample (5-10 pages) (a legal writing sample is requested, if available)
  • Contact information for three references
  • One page statement describing how diversity has impacted the candidate

Spring 2012 Graduation Application Info.

Spring 2012 graduation applications due November 1, 2011

All students planning to graduate at the end of the spring 2012 semester must complete a graduation application no later than Tuesday, November 1. Late applicants will need to obtain the dean’s permission and pay the $100 late fee.

Law students must apply for graduation through ZipLine. Step-by-step instructions are available on the Graduation Services website.

Survival Tools and Workshops for Success

The Counseling Center at the University of Akron offers seminars and workshops to help you succeed and deal with life stressors inside and outside the classroom. Throughout the fall semester, the Counseling Center hosts FREE weekly workshops dealing with academic success, cultural issues, emotional health and physical well-being. Some upcoming workshops are as follows:
