The Philip R. Shawe Scholarship Competition

The Philip R. Shawe Scholarship Competition is a writing and oratorical contest focusing on a controversial corporate law case brought before the State of Delaware Chancery Court and recently affirmed by the Delaware Supreme Court involving TransPerfect Global and its co-CEOs, Phil Shawe and Elizabeth Elting. The competition, open to all second- and third-year law school students, focuses on the TransPerfect case, (In re:  TransPerfect Global, Inc.,” Civil Action No. 9700-CB and “Elizabeth Elting v. Philip R. Shawe, et al.” Civil Action No. 10449-CB) in which the Delaware Chancery Court, to create a non-negotiated exit strategy for one of the company shareholders, ordered the forced sale of the entire company against the will of the other two shareholders.

Contestants will write briefs on the U.S. constitutional implications (Due Process and Takings Clauses) of the Delaware courts’ powers to adopt a forced sale remedy when shareholders of a highly profitable privately-held corporation are deadlocked. The contestants will be asked to write an argument to be heard by the United States Supreme Court reversing a decision by the Delaware Supreme Court which affirmed the decision by the Delaware Chancery Court.

The deadline to submit a brief (of no more than 15 pages) is due on April 20, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. Monetary prizes will be given to the top three briefs (1st place: $65,000; 2nd place: $25,000; 3rd place: $10,000).

Further Information about contest rules and regulations can be found on our website: https://philshawescholarship.com/ or on Facebook @PhilShaweScholarshipChallenge.

Dear students interested in copyright law, intellectual property, art, music, publishing, software, or creativity:

I want to let you know that we’re now offering Copyright Law this fall on Tues/Thurs 1:15-2:45PM. This was not on the original draft Fall 2017 schedule, but I strongly encourage you to consider taking this course this fall.  The reason for the change is that we’ve recently hired Prof. Ryan Holte as the new Director of the IP Center. We’re excited to welcome Prof. Holte to the Akron Law family!  He is a terrific professor and he’ll be teaching Copyright Law this fall.

Please remember that Copyrights can be taken without taking IP Fundamentals *or* you can take both courses concurrently.  It’s a wonderful class and you’ll be sure to learn a lot and have a good time.  If you have any questions about the schedule, please feel free to contact Misty Franklin.   If you have questions about the IP certificate, Copyright Law, or anything else related to IP, feel free to contact me.  – Dean Vacca  (vacca@uakron.edu)
