Monaco Presents & Publishes

Mike Monaco presented “The life-changing magic of RegEx” at the Library Collective’s 2020 conference in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Thursday, March 12. This was a hands-on workshop introducing the attendees to what regular expressions (RegEx) are and how to use them to match different patterns in text or data, using games. His co-presenter, Kathryn Lybarger of the University of Kentucky, was unable to attend this conference due to illness.

McCullough Wins Grant

Ian McCullough won a professional development grant of (up to) $2,500 to attend the two-day Library Carpentry Workshops in Baltimore this March. This is sponsored by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Southeastern Atlantic Region and “focuses on building software and data skills within library and information-related communities.” Specifically, Ian will be learning about GitHub and getting a brief introduction to Python.

Kaufman, Kennedy News

Steve Kaufman, Senior Instructional Designer, was thoughtful enough to share several interesting things going on.  Steve and Sean Kennedy, UL Electronic Services, are representing UA’s Affordable Learning Initiative. 

  • Our Affordable Learning Initiative has been accepted to present a panel on “Designing for Open: Success Stories in Implementing Open Textbooks and Resources” on February 28th at Cleveland State’s OpenCon Cleveland 2020. We will be bringing our faculty development teams to present on the process of adopting an open textbook and share the results of student surveys.

  • On January 31st, Kaufman will be the keynote speaker for North Carolina’s Quality Matters Consortium kickoff meeting. He will be presenting “Building a Statewide Culture of Quality”, which shows how 60 institutions in Ohio work together to provide professional development and course reviews to our members.

Bloom & Hayes Presentation

Mark Bloom and Brittany Hayes presented at OhioDIG on November 14, 2019 at the Columbus Metro Library.  They gave a PowerPoint presentation titled “Sharing Initial Steps on a Digital Preservation Policy and Program at The University of Akron.”  OhioDIG stands for Ohio Digitization Interest Group.  It meets every other month.  For more information, check their website:  https://ohiodig.org/

Sausmikat & Suarez Scholarship Recipients

Congratulations to Rita Sausmikat and Laracarina Suarez, Friends of the University Library Scholarship Awardees!

Let’s hear it for Rita and La! As qualified recipients of the 2019/2020 Friends of the University Library Professional Development Scholarship, these future librarians are pursuing their studies in graduate library science programs. They have demonstrated potential for accomplishments in librarianship and each will receive a scholarship to assist with funding their education.

The scholarship recipients will also be recognized at a library ceremony in the Spring Semester 2020, where the recipients’ names will be added to a library plaque. We wish them success!

Kennedy Published

Sean Kennedy, along with his co-presenters (including UL alums Garewal and Wisneski) were invited to write a chapter in the annual conference proceedings monograph for the Charleston Conference. The book is open access and was just published a few days ago online at https://www.fulcrum.org/concern/monographs/f7623f16x?locale=en

Our chapter is titled Springing into Collections: Best Practices for Inheriting an Academic Library Collections Budget.

Marilia Antúnez Recognized for Achieving National Credential

University Libraries is pleased to announce that Marilia Antúnez, Life & Allied Health Sciences Librarian, has been nationally recognized by the Medical Library Association (MLA) for attaining membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP). The Academy is the credentialing and career development program for health information professionals. Academy membership is based on three areas of achievement: academic preparation, professional experience, and professional accomplishment. Ms. Antúnez’s membership was approved at the Distinguished Member level.

University Libraries is proud to have Marilia Antúnez supporting the needs of the health information profession. “We are excited to celebrate this recognition of Ms. Antúnez’s achievements. This is really wonderful news!” Dean Aimée deChambeau.

McCullough Elected

Ian McCullough was recently elected as a Liaison Council Member-At-Large to the Executive Committee of Akron AAUP.  He will preside as a co-chair during meetings of the Department’s Liaisons Council in addition to serving on the Executive Committee.  His term lasts until next fall.
