Bar Exam Basics Workshops: Organizing your MPT – Today!

Bar Exam Basics – a Series of Workshops

College of Arts and Sciences Room 136 (for this workshop)

College of Arts and Sciences Room 144 (for the last three workshops)

Each workshop is offered at 1:30 and 5:30, with the exception of the Half-Day Hangout

Wednesday, June 15, PM- Organizing Your MPT

The concept of an MPT is easy – you are provided all of the materials, and don’t need to remember anything other than how to write like a lawyer.  The execution – not so easy.  The outlining technique taught in this workshop allows you to organize and write your essay in the 90 minute time frame.  [Similar to any ALA class, updated to include less formal outline techniques & case summaries]

  • Food & informal Q&A starts at 1:00 for the 1:30 workshop and 5:30 for the 6:00 PM workshop
  • Sign up here so I make sure to bring enough food!

The rest of the Workshop Series + the Half-Day Hangout

  • Tuesday, June 21 – MBE Strategies and Tactics (CSA 144)
  • Monday, June 27 –   Making up the Rules (CSA 144)
  • Tuesday, July 5 –  MPT Exam Simulation (CSA 144)
  • Saturday, July 16, 12:00 – 5:00 PM:  Half-day Hangout (Law school)

Not quite an alumni but want a head start?

If you are nearly ready to take the bar exam (graduating in December or next May) and just want an early start, feel free to come join the fun (and food)!    For the essay workshop, bring any multi-issue hypothetical you have written for any subject (response and preferably the prompt as well) – or try your hand at writing an actual Ohio essay and bring it (you can find tons at the bottom drop-down box here)

Apologies!

I apologize if you are preparing for the July Bar Exam and are just hearing of today’s (Thursday’s) workshop.  I have been trying to reach you since Monday – but I have heard from several of you that you are no longer receiving (or have not ever received) my emails.

If you are among the alumni preparing for the bar exam who has not received up to 4 emails from me and one from Chris Crull (Assistant Director of Academic Success) since Monday, please let me know via email at nlr22@uakron.edu.  We’re working with IT (and looking for a work-around) to fix the communication challenges!

Conversation with an Ohio Bar Examination Grader

Don’t miss this opportunity to gain invaluable insight into the Ohio Bar Exam!

You are invited to a behind-the-scenes peek at the Ohio Bar Exam with Charles Price, former grader for the Ohio Bar Examination.  Mr. Price was responsible for writing a model answer and grading one essay question for each bar exam from 2006 to 2015, typically in contracts, civil procedure or evidence.

Thursday April 28 – 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM

The location will be announced once we have an idea of room size needed.  Please sign up here.

(If space is limited, preference will be given to those taking the bar exam this summer.)

A light meal will be provided.

Interested in the New York State Bar Examination? Must Read Information

The law school received the following information on March 28, 2016 from John J. McAlary, Executive Director of the New York State Board of Law Examiners.

In conjunction with the adoption of the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) in New York, the State Board of Law Examiners was directed by the Court of Appeals to create an on-line course, known as the New York Law Course (NYLC), and an on-line, open book exam on New York specific law, known as the New York Law Exam (NYLE).

A candidate seeking admission in New York must take the NYLC and take and pass the NYLE, in addition to earning a score satisfying New York’s passing score on the UBE, prior to be being certified to one of our Appellate Division departments for a character and fitness investigation.

The Board expects to make the NYLC available by early April. Applicants will be required to view recorded lectures on 12 subjects covered by the NYLC and NYLE. When viewing the lectures the first time, applicants will be required to answer questions during the course of each lecture, to assure that they are attentive to and gaining an understanding of the material presented.  Applicants will be able to review the lectures again, if they wish, at a later time, without answering the embedded questions.

The NYLE will be administered this year on May 26th, August 18th, October 13th, and December 15th.  Details regarding the NYLC and NYLE requirements can be found on our website at http://www.nybarexam.org/UBE/UBE.html.

The Board has prepared comprehensive Course Materials for the NYLC and NYLE. Those materials are now also available on our website at  https://www.nybarexam.org/Content/CourseMaterials.htm. All of the questions that will appear on the NYLE will be based on these materials and can be answered by reference to them.

Although the NYLE is an open book exam, it will be a rigorous one. Time will not permit an applicant to research the materials for the answer to every question.  Preparation for the NYLE by taking the NYLC and studying the Course Materials will be necessary.
Executive Director
