Extended Bar Prep Study Groups – Wed & Sat

The Extended Bar Prep Study Groups (formerly Early Start) will meet on Wednesday evenings 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM and Saturday morning 10:30 AM – 12:30 AM in L-325.

The formal bar prep study period is from graduation through the bar exam – roughly 9 weeks.  In those 9 weeks you need to (re)master 15-16 subjects, as well as learning how to write in a way that exploits the 2-3 minutes the grader spends reading your essay.

Many people find this is just not enough time (especially for the February bar exam – which includes a variety of holidays and time traditionally spent with families).   These study groups let you extend your bar prep study period by starting a semester or two ahead of graduation.

The study groups are open to anyone who wants to join – no advance preparation required.  I’ll bring outlines from the ASP resource room, and we’ll muddle through together – whether you’ve covered the material before or not.  It’s a relatively painless way to get started writing essays – the most important thing you can do to prepare for the bar exam.

This week we’re writing a wills essay (Ohio bar exam essay from February 2010, question 5).

Bar Exam: Early Start & Last opportunity for MPT simulation

Last workshop for the July Bar Exam

Tuesday, July 10 (L-325) @ 1:30 /Wednesday, July 11 (L-325) @ 6:30  –  MPT Exam Simulation:

Every year, a few foolhardy souls never get around to writing any MPT essays until the morning of the first day of the bar exam.  That doesn’t usually end well.  Take advantage of the opportunity to write an MPT essay under exam conditions.  (There will be different MPTs for Tuesday and Wednesday, and I’ll do my best to choose an essay that was not used by any vendor this year, and was not used in ALA in 2017-18, or as an alternate MPT for those of you who did the full exam sim last week.)  Sign up here so I bring enough food.

Early Start Study Groups (essay writing)

  • L-325 – Tuesday 6:30; Thursday 1:30: This week: Con Law (commerce clause)
  • L-325 – Thursday 6:30; This week: (Civ Pro)
  • L-325 – Saturday 10:30 – Issue spotting marathon? If you’re up for it, we’ll run through as many essays as we can – issue spotting (but not writing), take a break for lunch, then keep going as long as you want.
  • You may participate in the Early Start groups remotely. WebEx: https://uakron.webex.com/join/nlr22

Half-day Hangout (Outside of L-325)

Homemade food (sloppy joes, multiple varieties of hummus, veggies, and freshly baked bread).  Some of you have expressed interest in an issue spotting marathon in lieu of writing a single essay Saturday morning.  We’ll break for food around noon, then we can do more issuse spotting or whatever else is useful.

Intended primarily for people taking the bar exam ths July, but anyone who wants to get a head start on a future bar exam is welcome to join us.

Bar Prep Workshop: Making up the Rules!

Making up the Rules

Tuesday, June 19 – 1:30 – L-201
Wednesday, June 20 – 6:30 – L-201

Thre are approximately 15 subjects on the bar exam.  Even if you don’t hit any speed bumps in your studying, there will still be rules you just don’t remember.  No one remembers them all, as you can probably tell from the released answers!

The rule-making techniques from this workshop will help you thrive when you mind goes blank, as well as helping you improve your rule stack for the majority of the time when you mostly remember the rules.

Sign up here to make sure I have enough food for you.

Both sessons available by WebEx

The workshop is intended primarily for  people preparing for the July 2018 bar exam, but the longer you practice, the better your skills by the time it’s your turn!

[Similar to the Spring 2017 ALA – but with a new set of  essay snippets for rule generation]
