Barristers Ball Letter from SBA

Hey Everyone,

My name is Matthew Aberegg and I’m here to answer any questions you have about Barristers Ball.  In general I will handle the logistics here.  My phone number is 3304615777 for the quickest response and if not I will get to your response email throughout this week prior to the ball.   I’ll be at the career planning meeting tonight, and tomorrow during the day to answer any questions as well.

Barristers Ball is a law school tradition around the country.  It is a time when faculty, students and friends/guests of both are able to come together in a formal setting and have a great time.  It’s a time to relax and hangout while you can dance and dress up.  The attire is formal for women and men. It’s a cocktail type dress generally but you do not have to conform to that. For the guys it’s either a suit or a jacket and dress pants type deal.  You do not have to wear a tie if you do not want to.

The event this year is this Friday October 20, from 7-11 PM at Tangiers in the back ballroom.  People can show up on time or a little bit late, the doors will close at 8 PM.  The event ends at 11 PM and there’s generally a large group that goes out after.  This is not sanctioned by the SBA or endorsed by the SBA but a general rule of thumb.  DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE from the event or to the event.  If you are not from the area, there are places afterwards like the valley or downtown that you and your friends can go to.  You may buy door tickets.  They will be the same price as the tickets online, but we will not have planned for your attendance as far as food goes.  There will be ample space and seating for everyone regardless.  The tickets will still be 25 dollars, but you will have to pay cash. No more than 2 guests per person, at the door if you have more than 2 per law student we will have to turn you away.

The event itself has a photographer, with a backdrop and props when you enter, you and your friends or significant others can take group or couples shots in front of the backdrop.  These will all be uploaded to a sharing website so you may access them for free.  The photographer will then move around the party later and take photos of the dance floor and groups accordingly.

There will be a DJ, the DJ has extensive experience performing at dances and weddings.  They are bringing lights, lasers, smoke, and confetti cannons.  The first hour and a half will be more of a cocktail hour where the professors and staff tend to remain and socialize with their students.  When they leave the music will likely get louder and the lights will be brighter for a genuine party.  The DJ may or may not take requests and will be there for the entirety of the party.

There are heavy appetizers, 125 orders total of a combination of Fresh Cut Vegetable Crudités, Fruit and Berries (Seasonal Fresh Fruit and Berries served with our Honey Dip), Chicken Strips Mozzarella Sticks Miniature Meatballs Cooked and served in Barbeque Sauce, Jalapeno Popper and Assorted Cookies.  We plan for how many tickets are bought online, do not rely on this as a dinner. Please eat before you come at 7.

The bars are cash bars.  There will be four bartenders and we won’t know how they’re stationed until we get there.  The bars will be available for anybody who is 21+.  If you are not 21+ and you attempt to drink from the bar, we will ask you to leave because it is a liability for the Law School.  Do not bring in your own alcohol, if you are caught with a flask you will be asked to dump it out or leave.  Do not fight one another, and do not do anything that you may be arrested for. There is a police officer for safety but he/she isn’t there to arrest you so don’t make them.

Ultimately, the goal of the night is to grow closer and to have fun with your peers, future colleagues, and professors.  It’s a good time for everyone, and you’re really able to let loose.  Dancing, drinks, food and photographs to remember it all make it most closely resemble a wedding reception, not a prom or HS dance.  I encourage everybody to go with a friend, group or significant other but that is not a necessity and you can always join in on the dance floor.  We are just here to facilitate your good time, if you have any questions just ask!

Thanks,

Matthew Aberegg
