Public Interest Law Program Applications Being Accepted Beginning February 6, 2017

Public Interest Law Program – Summer 2017: Each semester (spring, summer and fall), the Law School awards a stipend to a number of students who have secured a public interest internship. Applications for funding for the Summer 2017 Public Interest Law (PIL) Program will be accepted beginning Monday, February 6, 2017.

Students interested in applying for a Summer 2017 Public Interest Law award should begin thinking now about securing a placement for their spring PIL work experience. The Public Interest Law Program supports and encourages those students who would like to gain experience in public interest areas. Recent local placements have included:

Community Legal Aid Services of Akron

City of Canton, Public Safety and Service Departments

Council of International Programs USA Mahoning County Prosecutor

National Labor Relations Board Ninth District Court of Appeals Ohio

Civil Rights Commission U.S. Attorney’s Office

Stark County Public Defender’s Office

Stow Law Department

Summit County Prosecutor

University of Akron Legal Clinic/Appellate Review Office

U.S. Attorney’s Office

U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit

If you think you would like to obtain a public interest internship, but have no idea how to line up a placement, please feel free to call upon Asst. Dean of Career Planning, Alisa Benedict O’Brien.

The deadline to submit your application for SUMMER 2017 PIL funding is Monday, April 10 at 12:00 Noon.  You must secure a public interest placement before submitting your application. Visit for http://www.uakron.edu/law/curriculum/extern-register.dot application materials and more information.

PAD General Meeting on Thursday

PAD will be holding two meetings on Thursday, February 2nd:

  1. 12:30 – 1:30 at the law school in Room 161
  2. 5:00 – 6:00 at Central Hower, Room 310B

The meetings are not for members only, they are general body meetings for current members as well as students interested in joining.  We will cover general information for interested students, initiation for any new members, this semester’s planning, and there will be food available!

The Substance Abuse Lecture is Today

The Spring 2017 Substance Abuse Lecture is today!  You can fulfill this requirement now for the rest of the time you are in law school, or have your final opportunity to attend a free lecture if you haven’t yet attended and plan to graduate in Spring 2017.

Spring 2017 Substance Abuse Lecture

Date:  Wednesday, February 1

Time: 5:20 – 6:20 pm    *Please note:  ARRIVE EARLY to sign in – there will be no admittance after 5:20 pm.

Location:  McDowell Law Center Room 160

Your attendance is verified by your signing the attendance sheet as you enter the lecture.  Doors will open at 5:00 pm, and no one is admitted after the lecture has begun.  Akron Law hosts this free lecture twice each year, at the beginning of the spring and fall semesters.

The Substance Abuse Lecture is required for anyone who plans take the Ohio Bar at any time in the future.  You may attend this lecture during any semester you are in law school, and we will verify your attendance with the Supreme Court of Ohio when you graduate.

Grad Fair for the Class of 2017

Mark your calendar for the annual Grad Fair on Wednesday, March 8th!  If you are a member of the graduating class of 2017, please plan to attend.

At the Grad Fair, you will be able to

  • order your Commencement cap, gown, and hood as well as other Commencement items
  • meet with Dean Fuller and the Student Services Team for a final audit of your degree clearance for your degree
  • have your professional head shot photo taken if you did not do so before exams in the fall 2016 semester
  • meet with the Career Planning office
  • pick up your Character Certificate if you have not already done so
  • ask any questions you may have!

Are you poised to complete your law degree at the conclusion of the Fall 2017 semester?  An application for graduation is required.
