Early Start Bar Study Group

Early Start Bar Study Group – Central Hower 307

Fridays @ 2 PM

Saturday 1 PM*

  • This week:  A contracts essay (Statute of Frauds and/or Parol Evidence)
  • Next week:  Interactive multiple choice strategies for the MBE (multiple choice) portion of the bar exam

The study group is open to anyone who has a bar exam in their future who is interested in getting a head start.  (It is primarily designed for people preparing for the July 2017 bar exam, but at least one participant is preparing for the July 2018 exam!)

Four out of four of the alumni panelists Tuesday night ALA class indicated the most important thing they did to prepare for the bar exam was to write lots of essays – so that by the time the bar exam rolled around the actual bar exam was just 12 more essays.  In contrast, the most frequent barrier to writing essays early is, “I don’t know enough to write essays yet.” This often leads to delaying essay writing until the last 2 weeks before the bar exam.  The study group is a risk-free way to get past that emotional hurdle and get started!

* There’s been a request to move the Saturday group to Saturday morning or Sunday evening.  If you’ve been attending (or are interested in attending the weekend group, let me know if either of those new times works for you)

Alumni Panel Discussion on the Bar Exam

I’m hosting an alumni panel discussion on the bar exam Friday morning from 9:45 AM to noon in my ALA class.  There are a few seats open in the classroom.  I’m making those seats available to people planning to take the July bar exam.   The class is also writing a torts essay ahead of the panel discussion – you’re welcome to participate in that, too, if you want an early taste of bar exam essays.

Because the number of seats is limited, please contact me if you would like to attend.  Nancy Reeves – nlr22@uakron.edu

Come get a head start on studying for the bar exam!

Friday 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM  – OR  – Saturday 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM – Central Hower 307

Topics this week:

  • Essay write:  Secured Transactions (Ohio Bar Exam February 2005, Question 2)
  • Study Planning (March 22 is 62 days out from the start of bar prep – the start date one vendor suggests correlates with a significantly higher pass rate)
  • Anki flash cards

Next three sessions:

  • Sunday – April 2 @ 2:00 PM (Topic to be selected this week – no Friday/Saturday session next week)
  • Friday/Saturday – April 7/8 – Statute of Frauds & Parol Evidence
  • Friday/Saturday – April 14/15 – MBE (Multiple Choice) strategies

The study group is intended for people preparing for the July 2017 bar exam.  It’s never too early to start learning the skills you need to master the bar exam, so feel free to drop in even if you’re farther away from your bar exam!

If you’d like to participate, and you don’t yet have access to the Early Start Springboard site, let me know and I’ll add you.

Early Start Bar Study Group

Get a head start on your bar study!

A weekly bar study group will start in about a week.  It’s a good, relatively painless, way to get a head start on bar study.  One of the bar vendors has documented a substantial increase in the pass rate of students who start studying 62 days ahead of the formal start date.  This winter’s group met 2 hours a week and wrote 16 additional essays in advance of the bar exam.

This study group is geared primarily for those planning to take the July 2017 bar exam, but is open to anyone willing to dive into writing essays on Ohio bar exam subjects.

If you’re interested – vote for the days that would be best/impossible for you.  Later this week I’ll announce the meeting dates (one or two, depending on interest).
