Critical Springboard! Maintenance

Danger IconITS will be performing critical maintenance on the Springboard! Servers this afternoon (January 5th) beginning at 2:30 PM.  The system is nearing its capacity of file storage and must be expanded. The system will be unavailable during this time.  We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.  We will post a message on the Springboard! Blog when the maintenance is complete.

Open Labs for Instructors

Information Icon Instructional Services in conjunction with Zip Support will once again offer open labs for instructors during the first week in January.

Members of Tier 2 and Tier 3 support will be available to help you jump start the implementation of your Springboard! Content. We will also provide multimedia support including Clickers, Elluminate, and CourseCast.

New this spring, we are bringing more open labs to more locations and have included offerings in Polsky, Bierce, and the Wayne Campus.

Springboard Unavailable Wednesday Morning, 12/16/09

Danger IconSpringboard will be unavailable Wednesday morning, December 16, 2009 as we upgrade to the newest version of the Learning Management System. In preparation for this, we recommend that you Export your Gradebook data to an alternate location after you finalize your calculations. Instructional Services anticipates the system will be offline from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on December 16. We certainly apologize in advance if anyone is inconvenienced. The end is near!

As we approach the end of the semester, please prepare to do the following:

  1. Calculate your Final Grades.
  2. Export your Gradebook data to a secure location.
  3. Copy your course Content to a new Spring course or to an archived copy.
  4. Compile your Discussions to a file you can print or archive.

Expanded Springboard Support

In January 2008 the Springboard learning management system (LMS) was launched. In May 2008 there were 1,397 active course sections in the system. In November 2009 there were 2,615 active course sections and over 24,000 unique student logins to the environment each month. The rapid adoption of Springboard by faculty and students to extend the physical classroom into the online environment has been truly impressive. Predictably, this growth spurt has challenged our ability to provide clients with the support they have come to expect and deserve. During the Fall 2009 start-up it became evident that we were nearing maximum capacity for the two individuals tasked with responding in a timely fashion to the hundreds of requests for assistance directed to their personal email accounts, personal phones, emails to Springboard Help, voice messages to the Springboard Help phone and Footprints tickets. So like the ‘Mom and Pop’ shop that has outgrown its neighborhood location, we have outgrown our existing system and need to restructure how Springboard support is provided to meet the increasing demands.

A careful analysis of requests for assistance directed to Springboard Help indicates that over 80% were generated by students. These Level 1 and Level 2 requests were for issues such as: unable to see my class, course not active, quizzes not active, or content won’t open. The first step in designing an expanded Springboard support system was to separate routine student questions from faculty initiated requests. The following elements have now been put in place as:

  1. All requests for assistance must be directed to the Zip Support Center by phone 330-972-6888 or by email: support@uakron.edu
  2. A new ‘role’ was defined within Springboard for Zip Support Center staff that will allow them increased visibility to diagnose and resolve problem issues.
  3. Performance-based training was provided to Zip Support Center staff to develop their expertise in Springboard and Peoplesoft related support issues.
  4. The Zip Support Center provides expanded hours of service and all requests will generate a Footprints ticket. The ticket system will ensure rapid escalation to Level 3 resources if the problem cannot be resolved by the support center. Tracking requests will help us improve service offerings and identify problem patterns more easily.

The second step was to ensure the accumulated knowledge about Springboard was documented and re-distributed to a support team of highly trained full-time staff members. Requests from faculty that cannot be resolved by the Zips Support staff such as, “Oops, I accidentally changed all my grades to F’s” are immediately escalated and assigned to the Springboard support team. The net gain for faculty will be a faster response time resulting in the following:

  1. All requests for assistance directed to the Zip Support Center by phone 330-972-6888 or by email: support@uakron.edu will benefit from the expanded hours of service.
  2. Performance-based training was provided to full time staff to develop a multi-person support team to provide Level 3 support for faculty – currently 6 individuals – with the knowledge and skills required to solve problems and develop solutions.
  3. Rapid escalation to Desire2Learn Support for any problems that are unique.
  4. Changes have been made to the role of “instructor” to permit increased instructor control of specific tasks at the course level such as adding a Teaching Assistant.

Issues with Internet Explorer 8 and Springboard!

This issue has been resolved.

Danger IconInternet Explorer 8 has been found to create several issues with Springboard!. We strongly recommend you NOT use IE 8 with Springboard!, at this time.

One of the biggest issues involved Content. If you are are using IE8 and experience a problem viewing files in the Content area of Springboard! (because of frames), here is what you can do: 

1.  Move your cursor to the extreme right side of your screen until it changes to a double-sided arrow. NOTE:  The double-sided arrow will appear when your cursor hovers over the vertical frame.

2.  Click and hold your left mouse button.

3.  Pull the edge of the frame to the left. Your documents will show to the right of the vertical frame.

Springboard! Unavailable Friday 07/31/09

Danger IconAs previously posted, Springboard! will be offline and unavailable this Friday, 07/31/09 as we upgrade to the newest version of the Learning Management System (v8.4.2).

We expect to resume normal operations with full system availability on Saturday, August 1st at 8:00AM.

Springboard! Upgrade is Coming!!!

On Friday, July 31, 2009 Springboard! will be unavailable starting at 8:00AM as we upgrade to the newest Learning Environment version 8.4.2.

The system will once again be available on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 8:00AM.

There are no major changes to Springboard! in this upgrade which would require additional training.

 

What’s New In Version 8.4.2?

  1. New default font setting for the HTML editor for Content (does not affect any other tool).
  2. New Dropbox submission options available to allow only one file per submission or unlimited file submissions. In addition, there are expanded submission options to keep all submissions, overwrite submissions, or allow only one submission.
  3. Common Cartridge standard for imports now supported in this version. Some publishers have started to create their course materials to follow this new Common Cartridge standard. It improves the import of publisher materials.
  4. Edit Course takes Instructors to a newly organized page of tools, organized by Category.
  5. Improvements to Look and Feel. These changes are mostly cosmetic and will not require additional end-user training.
