Desire2Peek: Release Conditions

The new version of Springboard (D2L 9.2) is coming and is set to become active on May 11th, but it is already active on our test system! That means that you can try out the new features now and help us ensure that they are fully functional before the upgrade to our production environment. One of the many new features that will be available—which is available right now in the test environment— are new release conditions.

The new release conditions will give you greater flexibility in the release of content, quizzes, etc. to your students. You will be able to more efficiently control which students may access course materials and when they may access them. The new release conditions that will be available are:

  • Under Classlist: Date of Enrollment in the Current Course
  • Under Quizzes: Score on Selected Questions and Score on Associated Rubrics

What’s in it for my students and me?

  • Allow students or groups of students to move at their own pace through the content and those struggling on particular assignments or questions will need to meet proficiency before moving on.
  • In a seminar course with rolling enrollment, allow groups of students to access materials at different times.

To view a video demonstration of the new release conditions, select the picture below.

One of the many new features that will be available—which is available right now in the test environment— is the ability to change dates for the news in the manage dates area.

No longer will you have to go into each individual news item to change its date settings, you can now change them all en masse quickly and easily in the manage dates tool. What’s in it for my students and me?

  • Quickly change release and closing dates for one or more news items.
  • Save time by offsetting all news item dates at the same time after copying course content from a previous course.

Desire2Peek: Pager

The new version of Springboard (D2L 9.2) is coming and is set to become active on May 11th, but it is already active on our test system! That means that you can try out the new features now and help us ensure that they are fully functional before the upgrade to our production environment. One of the many new features that will be available—which is available right now in the test environment—is an updated pager tool.

The updated pager tool has a new look and has new features. A red mark will appear in the pager window when a message is received. An “Inbox” tab where you can filter your messages has been added. Also, a “Friends” tab and a “Classlist” tab have been added to make finding students or colleagues easier.

Select the picture below to view a quick video demonstration of the pager tool.

Here are a few examples of ways you might use this functionality in your own courses:

  • Easily send out messages to an individual or an entire class.
  • Urgent announcements that may require student attention, such as a canceled class, can be sent out with ease.

Desire2Peek: Grading

The new version of Springboard (D2L 9.2) is coming and is set to become active on May 11th, but it is already active on our test system! That means that you can try out the new features now and help us ensure that they are fully functional before the upgrade to our production environment. One of the many new features that will be available—which is available right now in the test environment—is an updated grading system.
The updated grading system for quizzes now allows you to grade one quiz question at a time. The new features also allow you to “blind grade” essay questions, questions can be weighted by points and these weight adjustments will be automatically calculated. Here are a few examples of ways you might use this functionality in your own courses:

  • Regrade a single question that a student or class has an issue or question about.
  • Grade essay responses without seeing the name of the writer.
  • True and false questions can be weighted by points differently then an essay response.

This can all be accomplished with the updates to the grading system. The new feature allowing you to grade by individual questions is pictured below.

Select the picture below to view a quick video demonstration of the updated grading system.

Desire2Peek: Voice Recording

The new version of Springboard (D2L 9.2) is coming and is set to become active on May 11th, but it is already active on our test system! That means that you can try out the new features now and help us ensure that they are fully functional before the upgrade to our production environment. One of the many new features that will be available—which is available right now in the test environment—is Voice Recording.
Voice Recording will be available within the Discussions, News, Dropbox, and ePortfolio tools. Here are a few examples of ways you might use this functionality in your own courses:

  • Participate in a threaded discussion using an audio message rather than a typed response.
  • Provide verbal feedback on individual student assignments.
  • Record a podcast-style news item for the course homepage.
  • Suggest that students provide contextual introductions to ePortolio items.

This can all be accomplished with the new Voice Recording tool. Audio recordings get stored in place as attachments that students can access.

Select the picture below to view a quick video demonstration of Voice Recording.

Note about the video:
You may receive a prompt on your screen (like the one below) when you select to play the auto file on your desktop after downloading the file. Select the program you wish to use to open the file and to ensure that the file opens automatically in the future, check the “always do this action” option at the bottom on the prompt.

Things to consider about the new tool:

  • Students have access to the new tool as well.
  • What guidelines and expectations will you provide about audio versus written discussion postings?
  • You may want to inform your students early in the semester that they will need to have access to devices that allow them to record and play audio.
  • Some students may not have the ability to record or play audio, so it may be necessary to provide text in conjunction with any recorded audio.

LOR: Program LORs

Digital storage space is at a premium and there are no plans to eliminate the LOR. This means that learning objects that you publish will be secure and will be available for the foreseeable future. Along with the security of the general University of Akron LOR it is possible to create program LORs. In this type of LOR, learning objects would be available to all students in a particular program, yet not the entire university community. Individual programs would be able to control access to their own resources and learning objects. A particular class could be selected to gain access or the program as a whole. For more information on this type of LOR, contact Design and Development Services.

Select this link for an overview of the LOR.
